Five Controversies in Human Sexuality

1.) Gay Marriage
- We all know how gay marriage is a huge controversy. First of all, gay marriage is legal in some states but not legal in California...yet. I believe that this is a huge debate and people are fighting for their equal rights. When discussing gay marriage, it's hard to comprehend how some people feel so strongly against it. Why should it matter to most of the population who are not gay. First of all, those who are against gay marriage usually are not gay, therefor the decision to marry for them is not inhibited currently. Why do these people care so much?
2.) Public Nudity
- If you are ever in the Castro district, you are bound to see some very naked and very clean shaven men with their junk hanging out. Should this be allowed? A lot of people in San Francisco are thinking this should not be allowed because of it being unsanitary. But really? How sanitary is the city anyway when you have people peeing on the street. I highly doubt these naked bums on a bench are threatening us. I think that the naked people have more to worry about regarding germs than the rest of us.
3.) Prostitution
- This is the worlds oldest profession. If you look at certain districts of the city, prostitution is very prevalent. For instance, in Las Vegas prostitution is legal. When looking around San Francisco there are a wide array of women walking the streets. Even though there are a lot of prostitutes, it is looked down upon. I wonder if in Vegas prostitutes get more respect since it is legal? This is a very controversial topic that has a lot of people treating others with disrespect just because they accept money for sexual favors.
4.) Pornography
- Pornography is interesting because a lot of people think that it is ruining marriages, decreasing sexual satisfaction, and creating high expectations in the bedroom. Porn is very common. There are many different types of porn from soft core, hard core, girl on girl, gay, fetish, and everything you can think of porn. The thing about porn is it is normally kept secret. Nobody goes around telling each other what their favorite porn movie is. Our sexual fantasies that we watch are to be kept secret, maybe even from the people we are sexually active with.
5.) Erotic Art
- People are always debating whether or not erotic art is considered art versus pornography. Is it tasteful or smutty? The thing about erotic art is that it is acceptable. We are able to go to a gallery, dress fancy and look and beautiful naked photography or whatever the medium may be. A lot of people think that this is not art though. Who is to make this claim though? Why is a naked body not considered art? I think that our society has a lot of qualms with what is acceptable when it comes to sexuality. I hope to see people gain a sense of being comfortable in their own skin rather than hiding from the reality of who they are in their skin!
